Cleveland Clinic Sleep Matters Symposium 2026

Cleveland Clinic Presents

Sleep Matters: Unlocking the Mysteries of Sleep and Brain Health

For Neurology Practitioners 2026

About the Symposium

Understanding of the complex relationships between sleep and neurology is rapidly accelerating as advances in neurophysiology, pathophysiology, epidemiology, and therapeutics elucidate the impact of sleep and sleep disorders on the brain. Sleep disorders are highly prevalent in neurological populations and are associated with significant morbidity and mortality. Yet, sleep-wake impairments are commonly under-recognized leading to diagnostic delays that further burden patients, caregivers, and the healthcare system. A major contributing factor to this is insufficient understanding of the importance of sleep in neurology practices.

Our inaugural “Sleep Matters: Unlocking the Mysteries of Sleep and Brain Health for Neurology Practitioners” symposium will address this critical knowledge gap with the latest scientific advances, emerging therapies, and new perspectives from a diverse panel of experts reviewing cutting-edge treatments and innovative research, and the expanding landscape of sleep neurology.

Please join us for an intriguing, interactive program that promises to stimulate interest in the underappreciated subspecialty of sleep neurology.

Target Audience

This educational activity is directed towards neurologists, advanced practice providers including PAs and APRNs, nurses and others involved in the care of patients with neurological disorders.

Objectives

At the completion of this activity, the participant should be able to:

  • Explain how sleep and sleep disorders impact neurologic health, cognition, and disease progression.

  • Recognize key clinical features of sleep disorders commonly seen in neurologic practice.

  • Apply current diagnostic and treatment strategies for sleep disorders in neurologic populations.

  • Summarize advances in neurobiology, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of hypersomnolence disorders, restless legs syndrome, parasomnias, insomnias, sleep disordered breathing and circadian rhythm disorders.

  • Incorporate the sleep evaluation into routine neurologic care for adults and children.

As a nurse practitioner working in a neuropsychiatry setting, sleep comes up in nearly every patient encounter, yet formal training on the topic has always been sparse. This symposium filled that gap in a way no textbook ever has. The insomnia in neurological and psychiatric populations session was directly applicable to my daily caseload — I appreciated how it addressed comorbid presentations rather than treating insomnia in isolation. The pediatric sleep module also opened my eyes to presentations I hadn't properly recognized before. The recordings are high quality, the slides are detailed without being overwhelming, and the panel discussions add a collegial, real-world texture to the content. Well worth the investment.

I recommended this symposium to my entire neurology department after going through it myself. The breadth of topics covered in a single day is impressive, and the faculty roster reads like a who's who of sleep neurology. What stood out most to me was the cohesion between sessions — each one built on the last, creating a satisfying narrative arc about how sleep underlies virtually every neurological condition we treat. The AI and machine learning segment presented by Dr. Araújo was genuinely exciting and raised important questions about the future of hypersomnolence diagnosis. For clinicians who feel undertrained in sleep medicine, this is the ideal starting point. Comprehensive, well-structured, and clinically grounded.

Sleep medicine has always felt like a separate world from my neurology practice, but this symposium genuinely bridged that gap for me. The session exploring the convergence of headache and sleep disorders resonated deeply — I have migraine patients whose sleep patterns I've never systematically evaluated. Dr. Mays presented this relationship with such clinical clarity that I restructured my intake questionnaire the following week. The module on sleep study indications was practical and demystifying, especially for practitioners like me who don't regularly order polysomnography. My only minor criticism is that I would have appreciated slightly more time on circadian rhythm disorders, which felt briefly touched upon. Still, an exceptional educational resource.

I attended a live version of this symposium and immediately purchased the on-demand recordings to revisit the material at my own pace. The session on central disorders of hypersomnolence was a revelation — I had patients I suspect may have been misdiagnosed for years. The diagnostic phenotyping discussion gave me a concrete framework to revisit those cases. I also found the sleep apnea content surprisingly nuanced for a neurology-focused audience; it went well beyond the basics and addressed OSA's role in stroke recovery and cognitive decline. Dr. Foldvary-Schaefer's closing app demo was a practical bonus I did not expect. Outstanding overall production.

I purchased this symposium recording as part of my continuing education as a physician assistant working in a busy neurology clinic. The content exceeded my expectations significantly. What I loved most was how each speaker connected their specialty to real-world patient outcomes — this wasn't just theory. The restless legs syndrome update from Dr. Devnani introduced me to treatment nuances I hadn't encountered before. The insomnia module was particularly relevant given how many of our neurology patients report poor sleep without it ever being properly addressed. The pacing across the full day was well managed, and the panel discussions added genuine depth. A must-have resource for any neurology APP.

As a neurologist with over fifteen years of clinical experience, I rarely come across educational materials that genuinely shift my perspective. Sleep Matters did exactly that. The session on REM sleep behavior disorder alone was worth every moment — Dr. Rodriguez presented compelling evidence linking RBD to neurodegenerative disease progression in a way that was both scientifically rigorous and clinically actionable. I especially appreciated the pediatric neurology component, which is so often overlooked in sleep-focused CME. The AI-enhanced diagnostics segment felt ahead of its time. I walked away with tools I could immediately apply to my practice. Highly recommend this to any neurologist who wants to sharpen their understanding of how sleep truly shapes brain health.
